OK, this is the obvious one but we can’t mention a library without talking about the incredible book borrowing service they offer. Did you know that if you want to borrow a book your library doesn’t have in stock, they will order it for you? So, if you’re looking for a specific research book or want to get your hands on a title that isn’t currently on their shelves, you can ask your librarian.

Libraries are moving with the times, too. The Libby app is the most common, but your local library might have their own app, for borrowing eBooks. So, if you love reading on your Kindle or eReader, you still don’t need to worry about buying them. You can borrow them online!

The same goes for magazines. Libraries give you access to a wide range of newspapers and magazines, which is particularly helpful if you’re researching something.

Your librarian is your resource, too. Whether you’re not sure how to navigate the Dewey Decimal system or need a recommendation for your next summer read based on your previous reading history, talk to your librarian. They’re passionate about reading and books, and very eager to help fellow readers find what they’re looking for.

If you like to read proper books instead of eBooks, but can’t get to your local library, ask them about home library services. Many will offer a drop-and-collect service for people who are unable to physically attend the library, with volunteers helping you to order and collect books on your behalf.

CDs and DVDs

Did you know that libraries also have a media section? Instead of spending on DVDs you watch once or CDs you get bored of after one summer, you can borrow from the library for free. Save hundreds of pounds each year by using the media library instead of Spotify, a TV licence, and streaming subscriptions! You might not be able to watch the very latest streaming shows, but if you need to save money while keeping yourself and your kids entertained, the media library is worth checking out. You can also borrow audiobooks, so you can save on your Audible subscription, too. Lots of the media, such as audiobooks and magazines, will be available on your library’s app (like BorrowBox or Libby – your librarian can tell you more).

Many libraries have a toy library that includes board games for all age ranges. If you want to have a fun night in with friends, or keep the kids entertained during the school holidays, take a look at what your library has to offer. Make sure you return all the pieces for the next borrower!

Community Cafes

The old school belief of being shushed at the library has moved with the times – while the main library areas are still quiet, many now have adjoining cafes. These are ideal if you want to borrow a magazine and buy a coffee for a quiet hour to yourself, or to meet a friend in a child-friendly cafe environment.

Libraries are notoriously under-funded, and their cafes offer them an opportunity to raise funds all year around. The prices are kept reasonable, to encourage people to choose their library over a chain coffee shop down the road, and they’re often run by volunteers.

You’ll often find that community groups are run from the library cafe too – from knit and natter to guerilla guardening, ask about what’s on in your area to find like-minded people who use the library as their community hub.

Free Library Computer Access

If you work from home and would like to be able to go somewhere to work for a few hours, but don’t want to sit in a loud cafe, check out your library! Many have booths you can hire for private study, but even working from the tables in the library will be nice and quiet. Most libraries will also offer you a slot to book for your child to do their homework on their computer, up to two hours usually, which gives them access to a lot of the library online subscriptions for research papers and magazines etc to help with their education.

If you can’t afford a computer, most libraries have computers you can book time on, too. And you can get some printing done, at a small surcharge (usually around 10p a sheet). And if you’re struggling to get to grips with technology or accessing particular information (such as getting onto your Universal Credit online account), your library will have a tech savvy person who can help.

Free Activities and Learning

Your local library will run a range of schemes to help people of all ages with their education. There’ll be Reading Well courses for children and teenagers, to help encourage them enjoy the past time of reading, as well as Story Time readings for younger children on a regular basis. Your (or your child’s) favourite author might also come to do a reading during a book launch tour, so sign up to your library’s newsletter to stay ahead of event news. During the school holidays, your library will run extra events for children to give you somewhere to go on a rainy day and participate in a free activity.

More than this, libraries will offer adult education courses. These may be courses to help you learn to read and write, or they might be one-off free or low fee courses to encourage you to try something new. It’s a great way to meet new people as well as try something out – and if you’re a homebody or unable to attend the library in person, many will record ‘Ted Talk’ style videos of their education sessions, so you can listen to talks in your own time at home.

Readers recently reported that they are constantly distracted. In fact, the Reading Agency’s State of the Nation report revealed that an average 46% of people feel distracted when reading, rising to a huge 55% for those aged 16-44 years old. One of the main reasons cited for reading less is lack of time (24%), too.

Ebooks provide a great way to manage the distracted reading problem, as you can more easily access them on whichever device is easiest for you to regularly access, such as a phone or tablet. With some apps, they can also sync with either the equivalent audiobook (such as with Kindle Unlimited) or at least have a text-to-speech readaloud function. This means people can choose to continue reading their book by listening to it if they are unable to sit down and focus on the words.

Ebooks are versatile

EBooks also suit people for various reasons: you can adjust the font size, access from different devices, and use screen readers if you have a visual impairment. They don’t weigh anything to carry around with you, nor do they take up physical space at home – you can store thousands on your device!

EBooks are also useful because they’re cheaper, when they aren’t free. The cost of paperback books has risen in recent years, due to the ongoing rises in printing and publishing costs. What used to be around £6.99 regularly reaches £10 or more – and hardbacks are easily over £20. EBooks don’t have the printing costs behind them, which means they can be distributed at scale without any change in the production price. This makes them more affordable to sell – and cheaper.

But we’re here for free eBooks, right? Right!

A List of Places for Legitimate Free eBooks

There is never any good reason to pirate eBooks (more on that below). The biggest reason? It’s easy to get hold of free eBooks from a number of legitimate websites! Try these to build your eBook collection.

Hoopla, BorrowBox, and Libby

These are library-linked borrowing apps. So, even if you can’t get to your local library to borrow a physical book, you can still borrow eBooks entirely free. If they don’t have it, you can request it – just like with a physical book! Your library will let you know which linked app or apps they use – and you usually don’t need to visit the library in person to get your library card to get started, either. Kindle Unlimited and Kobo Plus Free Trials

If you’re a new eBook reader, make the most of free trials. Kindle Unlimited is Amazon’s online bookstore, with hundreds of thousands of free books available to read via the Kindle app. You don’t need a Kindle device to read them. Sign up for a free month to try out the platform and read the titles that take your fancy – remember to cancel the trial before it ends if you want to avoid being charged the monthly £7.99 subscription price (which can be cancelled any time). The standard trial is thirty days, but keep an eye out as they often run deals up to three months’ free reading.

Kobo Plus is the leading competitor of Kindle. Again, you don’t need a Kobo e-reader to read their books. You can get the 30-day free trial just by signing up, and choose whether you want just eBooks (£8.99 a month), audiobooks only (£8.99 a month) or both (£11.99). This is significantly cheaper for avid combo-reader-listeners than other options such as Audible.

Prime Reading

We’ve already mentioned Kindle Unlimited, but did you know that if you have an Amazon Prime membership, thousands of books are already included for you to read for free? With Prime Reading, you’ll have access to a selection of Kindle Unlimited books, magazines, and audiobooks but without any extra subscription. The selection is far smaller than Kindle Unlimited, but there is still a LOT to choose from. Sign up for a free Amazon Prime trial of 30 days (or hunt around online for an extended trial offer!) to try it out.

Free Romance eBooks with Harlequin

Harlequin is a very established name in romance, and there’s a huge list of free romance eBooks available on their website. It’s updated regularly, so check back each month to find new titles.

Radish

Radish is an online platform mostly used by self published (independent) authors and small presses for serialised fiction. This means that rather than free eBooks, you can get free chapters – and complete a serial by reading each chapter or section.

Did you know that Google Books has over ten million free titles on their store? Visit the web page to search for a title, or browse the most popular downloads. You’ll find a lot of public domain titles but also loads of free ebooks available on promotions from publishers and indie authors to help spread the word about their books.

Free eBooks with Apple

You don’t need an Apple device to access their Apple bookstore, you can browse online or download the app. And they have tons and tons of free ebooks every month – including popular titles, brand new big releases and more.

Free Magazines with Readly

If you don’t have the attention span to read a whole free eBook, try magazines to get back into the reading habit. Readly has thousands of titles available – and currently has a one-month free trial available (£12.99 a month thereafter, cancel anytime). However, they frequently have two- or three-month free trials, so keep an eye out for offers! If you decide you like the platform, try getting a gift card rather than a rolling subscription as there are usually money-saving options to go via this route.

Become an ARC Reader

If you are desperate to get your hands on free ebooks before they’re published, you can apply to be an Advanced Reader Copy reader. This is when publishers and independently published authors send out digital or physical copies of their book before publication, to generate interest. In return, they ask you to review their book on websites like Goodreads, Storygraph, or Amazon – but you aren’t obliged to. However, if you’re getting a free eBook it doesn’t take much to leave a few lines on a review which will really help the author sell their book!

NetGalley is the leading marketplaces to become an ARC reader. You can also search on social media platforms like Threads to find independent authors and small publishers who have opened calls for ARC readers to go to them directly. You’re not guaranteed to receive an ARC when you apply, but the more reviews you leave, the more likely you are to be accepted regularly for free eBooks.

If you want to get into reading but think audiobooks are more your thing, you’re in luck!

Why Pirated Books Are Bad for Everyone

You may have heard of pirate book sites that list ebooks for free online. However, these are terrible – don’t do it! There are so many ways to get ebooks for free legitimately, that piracy isn’t worth it. Not only do you open yourself up to scams like downloading malware or signing up to subscriptions you can’t cancel, it hurts the author, too.

Did you know that even when you borrow an ebook or physical book from the library, the author gets paid a small amount? This means it doesn’t cost you anything, but it helps them maintain their job! Authors are paid so little, every penny counts.

Piracy is also bad for you as a reader, because there is no guarantee you’re getting the book you think you are. Whether you’re reading an earlier leaked version with errors, or a completely scam version that’s made with AI to rip off the author, the reading experience will be ruined for you.

Piracy Scams to Look Out For

There are so many ebook piracy sites out there, it’s hard to list them all. But it’s easy to spot them. Protect yourself and run away if you see any of these red flags:

• Every book is free (most legitimate free eBook sites have free and paid sections)
• You can only read an excerpt before signing up (often to a paid subscription)
• The book title is available before it is officially published
• The books are only PDF files – legit sites will offer different formats such as ePub
• It’s an ‘online library’ without a real lending system (you never have to return the book)
• You’re asked to read on their specific app that needs to be downloaded (and isn’t one of the ones listed above)

There’s no need to pirate when there are so many ways to get free eBooks online, so try the many ways above to find your favourite way to read for free!

We’ve come up with some easy ways you can save money without skimping on the fun!

Rent a Dress

HireStreetUK.com has a ‘wedding guest’ rental section, with maxi dresses starting from £18. Even John Lewis has a special ‘wedding guest’ rental section, with dress rentals costing about one sixth of the price that you’d pay to buy them outright.

You can also rent fascinators on John Lewis’s website. Or, if you like a challenge, make your own using a nice piece of fabric, some feathers and tuille, and an old hair slide. There are loads of tutorials (and even kits for sale) on the internet.

Tips for Men

Guys can also jazz up their out-of-date suit by investing in some inexpensive, head-turning accessories.

Don’t Attend the Stag/Hen

Unless you’re a direct sibling or parent of the bride or groom, you don’t have to attend the stag or hen do. Have a conversation with your friend about the costs, and explain that you have a limited budget that you would rather spend on their actual wedding. Peer pressure can be strong, but remember it’s not worth going into debt for someone else’s celebrations (or, really, your own!).

If you’re responsible for organising the stag or hen do, keep costs in mind. The bride or groom might want a weekend away somewhere, but most people won’t be able to afford that. Try to encourage a local event or activity, and remind them that it’s about spending time together not having extravagant holidays!

Save Money on Gifts

There are a few ways to save money on a gift without looking like a cheapskate. First, shop online for deals and discounts to find luxury items for a bargain. Use cashback sites like Topcashback and Quidco to stack your savings, too.

Second, if you know other friends attending the wedding, it could be worth all chipping in for a larger gift together. Many newlyweds would rather have fewer, more luxurious things than lots of small items.

If you’re really hard up, you could talk to the couple about offering your time instead. Perhaps they’re due to move house soon – offer your services as a moving buddy. Or if you’re a dab hand with a paintbrush, help them redecorate their new place. Maybe they have children or pets that need looking after while they go on dates as a newly married couple. Or, you could provide something for the wedding – if you’re a great baker, perhaps you could gift them their wedding cake, for example.

Consider Your Travel and Accommodation Costs

Saving on travel is easy if you’re organised about it. If a group of you are all attending from a similar location (such as from a city to a country hotel wedding venue), arrange a minibus and share the costs. Or, if the wedding is relatively local, choose a designated driver who won’t drink alcohol and get them to drive you home instead of paying for a late-night taxi.

Accommodation costs can quickly rack up, especially if you’re attending a wedding in the middle of the countryside and you’re expected to book rooms at the venue. Make it clear before the engaged couple confirm block booking on rooms whether you will want to take advantage of staying at the venue. It is often cheaper to find a nearby B&B, or even hire a whole house with other friends attending the wedding through sites like Air BnB to help everyone save on costs.

Limit Your Bar Tab

Many couples these days will offer a few drinks included, such as a welcome cocktail and a champagne for the speeches, and leave a cash bar for everything else. This can get costly when you’re buying alcohol, so try to alternate alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks. Avoid getting into buying rounds with friends too, as when the night carries on it can be easy to forget whose round it is and you’ll end up spending a lot more than you planned!

Say No

Finally, this one might sound like a spoilsport point, but it’s important to remember. If you can’t afford to attend a wedding as a guest, don’t go. Offer to spend time with the couple another time, perhaps picking an activity that will create wonderful memories for them as a newly married couple. For those who are close to the couple getting married, such as immediate relatives or best friends, you should be able to have the conversation about not affording to go. If they really want you there, they will find a way to make sure you can attend, so be honest about it.

We may talk about them a lot, but budgets are so useful and important in keeping on top of your finances – especially when it comes to weddings. Instead of planning your dream wedding and then trying to work out how you’re going to pay for it, ask yourself first what can you feasibly afford to spend on your wedding without getting into serious debt. And stick to it! The Hitched National Wedding Survey revealed that 60% of respondents had to extend their original budget, as they had underestimated and not researched enough.

It’s so easy to get swept up in wedding planning and be pushed to put down deposits on various things, but make sure you allow plenty of time to compare quotes first. This will help you create a realistic budget before you start spending anything. Make sure you have a conversation about areas you’re willing to compromise on, and non-negotiables, to save arguments down the line.

The easiest way to keep track of everything is inputting every spend, no matter how small, into a spreadsheet. Google Sheets is ideal as it’s all managed online and both you and your partner can edit it from any device – meaning you can keep it up-to-date when you’re out and about. Set up separate tabs for each of the major spends of the wedding – venue, catering, decoration, entertainment, and outfits. As you make purchases you’ll be able to instantly compare how much you’ve already spent to how much of your budget you have remaining, making it easy to monitor and make sure you don’t overspend.

Skip Expensive Hen and Stag Parties

Not only do hen and stag parties that involve weekends away or expensive activities cost you a lot, they can cost everyone else cash, too. Nobody appreciates being expected to drop a few hundred pounds going to a hen party only to spend the same amount again attending the same person’s wedding!

Go back to basics: enjoy a simple bar crawl in your local town, or be done with tradition and have a joint garden party at home. Take your hens out for an afternoon tea at the local hotel, or go paintballing together. Choose something that is affordable for EVERYONE, and don’t insist people attend, either. The fewer people who go to your hen and stag party, the less likely you are to rack up an unexpected bill!

Cut Down Your Guest List

Ultimately, something that will heavily determine how much you end up spending is the guest list. After all, when you’re paying for food, drink, and entertainment for each one of your guests it quickly adds up. Opt for a more intimate occasion with a guest list of 30 or less. You’ll be able to consider smaller (and cheaper) venues, like hiring a private room in a pub or restaurant, for example. As venues are a key cost in a wedding, if you can find a way to get a cheaper option you can save thousands.

Another option is to keep your guest list small for your wedding, but host a much larger celebration for your first anniversary. This gives you time to save separately and means you won’t have to worry about blowing a large chunk of your wedding budget on the reception.

If you’re feeling pressure to have a big wedding because of family and friend expectations, STOP. This is about celebrating your partnership, not what other people want. If you can’t get people to agree, you could always elope! Many couples now choose to have a private registry office wedding and announce their nuptials after the fact at a party (birthday, anniversary, house warming – whichever excuse can be found!) instead.

Postpone Your Honeymoon

In a similar line, delaying your honeymoon can help with your wedding costs. If, for example, you decide to go for your first anniversary instead, or even after 6 months, you’re giving yourself an extra time to plan and save for it instead of having to pay it all upfront. Travelling off-season will also help you save massively, read our article on how to grab yourself a holiday bargain here.

Postponing your honeymoon also gives people time to donate towards it as a wedding gift, too. Instead of having a gift registry (who needs another toaster?), you could ask for cash donations towards the honeymoon. You could even make your own ‘registry’ by listing activities you want to do on your honeymoon, like a city tour or going snorkelling, and how much they cost. People can then feel like they’re buying your memories as a newly married couple instead of throwing cash into the ether and not knowing what it’s spent on.

Opt for Creative Catering

For a budget wedding, avoid the traditional 3 course wedding breakfast followed by an evening buffet. Why not choose to get married later on in the day and then serve a large buffet for both the day and evening guests? This way you’ll only have to pay for one meal, and it’ll be much cheaper than a larger sit-down meal.

Consider other cheaper food options as well. Having an afternoon BBQ, creating fun picnic hampers for guests to share out, or hiring a food truck for the day are all fun ways to have delicious food on a budget.

Also, save on having to provide a dessert as well and serve up your wedding cake for dessert instead! You can also have ice cream carts and confectionary stands to allow people to choose their favourites. You can even hire a doughnut wall!

Shop for Pre-Loved and Second-Hand Items

You can find great bargains by shopping for pre-loved and second-hand items. Sites like StillWhite, Bridal Reloved, and Preloved, are three great places where you can find deals on wedding outfits and decorations. You’ll find things at a fraction of the price of what you would pay otherwise, and they’ve only been used once before! Plus, Oxfam even have their own online bridal shop now, which is packed with even more great deals.

High street and online stores also offer more affordable bridal and bridesmaid options. Monsoon, Joanna Hope, and Phase Eight are great places to start looking. Be wary of ordering very cheap custom-made dresses from overseas, however, as it can end up expensive with customs fees and you might not get the dress in the picture.

For men, buying a suit can be really expensive and depending on the style, is unlikely to be worn again or very often. If you’re looking to buy a wedding suit, instead it can be worth checking out high street stores like ASOS, Next, and Marks & Spencers, which offer their own cheaper wedding line alternatives.

Opt for Lab Diamond or Alternative Gem Rings

Lab grown diamond rings are 100% real diamonds, sharing the same chemical composition and optical properties as mined diamonds, making them a perfect ethical alternative for any newlywed couple! Oh and did we mention they are also budget friendly? Costing around 30% less than naturally mined diamonds.

You don’t have to have diamonds, either! Sapphires, rubies, and emeralds are all popular alternatives.

Don’t Insist on Matching Bridal Party Outfits

Nobody wants to be forced to wear a bridesmaid dress that’s unflattering. Ask your bridesmaids to buy their own dresses, and groomsmen their own suits, but give them the freedom to choose what they want. Or, you could ask that they keep within certain colour tones of your wedding theme – but if you do this, make sure your colours are neutral or something that means they can wear their outfit at other events after the wedding.

Make the Most of Supermarkets

Don’t forget about supermarkets when planning a budget wedding. Whether it’s for your wedding cake, or joining a loyalty scheme, they can be a great way to cut costs. Wedding cakes can cost an extortionate amount, but plenty of supermarkets now offer cheaper versions. Marks and Spencer is particularly known for its plain wedding cake options that you can stack and decorate yourself.

Plus, shopping with a loyalty card can earn you some great deals in the long-run. Tesco Clubcard has one of the best reward schemes where the value of your points triple in value when spent at one of their reward partners. Some of which include luxury jeweller Goldsmiths, various restaurants, and holiday and travel booking sites. So why not put that money towards a cheaper honeymoon?

If you know someone with a CostCo membership, ask if they’ll come with you on a self-catered trip. It’s easy to pick up cheap and delicious bulk catering items, from sandwich platters to a custom designed sheet cake that feeds 24 (with delicious white frosting) for under £20 a platter. It will add a little extra stress to your wedding as you’ll need to shop a day or two prior and have someone to help cater the food so you can focus on your day, but could save you hundreds of pounds.

Budget Your Booze

Alcohol is one of the most expensive parts of a wedding. We’re not saying you should have a dry wedding to save costs – but you can look at alternative options to reduce the bill. You might want to put a certain limit behind the bar, or arrange for a welcome drink, lunch wine, and speeches cocktail to be provided with everything else paid cash at the bar.

Some venues allow you to bring your own alcohol. There may be a ‘corkage’ charge so check what the fees are for that. You can also buy wine and champagne from wholesalers on a buy-or-return offer, meaning you can return any unused and undamaged bottles for a refund. Majestic Wines is popular and has an entire party service, with free glass hire, chiller hire, and sale or return on products.

Make sure that you offer plenty of non-alcoholic drinks, too. You might, for example, want to offer elderflower spritz or a mocktail for everyone’s welcome drink (which also ensures people aren’t too fuzzy before everything gets going, too!).

Get Rid of the Stationery

Not only is it pricey and not-so-great for the environment, but it’s also a completely unnecessary cost. Ditch Save the Date and RSVP cards and do it all online instead. Set up a free, simple website where guests can RSVP and you can email out details and any information about the wedding at no extra cost.

Skip the Summer Weekend

Summer Saturdays are the most sought after day to be married on and you’ll pay a premium to do so. Consider getting married Monday to Thursday when there’s much less demand and you’ll be able to negotiate a deal at a fraction of the cost.

Marrying completely off-season between October and March is ideal for a budget wedding. Plus, for the particularly savvy saver, why not get married at Christmas? Make the most of the already decorated venues and save yourself that extra expense!

Negotiate Hard

Booking off season also gives you a greater opportunity to negotiate. Businesses that need the trade may be willing to cut prices in order to secure a deal. If they’re not able to offer you a discount, see if they’d be willing to include any extras included instead. Maybe you could have a room upgrade? Or cut your corkage costs?

Have a Contingency Budget

There’s only so much you can do to prepare and realistically, extra costs are going to pop up when you least expect them. Set aside part of your budget for this to be prepared for the unexpected. Ideally, 5 – 10% of your budget saved as contingency cash will have you covered. Just remember to keep it separate from your main account so you don’t find yourself tempted to spend it!

Saving when you’re on a low income seems impossible – but with the Government’s Help to Save account, it’s not only possible but lands you with a whopping 50% bonus. The scheme has been extended to new applications until April 2027.

Designed for those in receipt of Universal Credit, this little-known savings account is available for many people on a low income. Over the course of 4 years, you could earn a massive £1200 FREE BONUS from the Government.

What is Help to Save?

The Government wants to encourage those on low incomes to save money. But, is saving really worth it when interest rates are so low and you need all the cash you’ve got?

Help to Save is the answer. It’s an easy-access savings account that comes with an added Government bonus in the second and fourth year you hold the account. The bonus isn’t interest – so it doesn’t count towards the annual £1000 tax-free allowance for interest earnings.

For the self-employed, it’s also worth noting that these bonuses don’t count as generated income – so no need to add them on your tax return.

The key things to know about Help to Save are:

1. You can save up to £50 a month (and there’s no penalty for months you don’t pay in)
2. If you’re in a couple, you can each have a Help to Save account
3. You’re eligible if you’re on Universal Credit and earn a household income of just £1 or more in one month
4. You only need to hit that earning amount once to qualify
5. In years two and four you get a bonus worth 50% your total savings of the highest amount saved in that year
6. You can withdraw your money at any time
7. It’s a Government scheme, so your money is safe (unlike, for example, a savings app that’s not covered by the FSCS rules).

How does Help to Save work?

You can pay between £1 to £50 a month into the account for a maximum of four years. You don’t have to pay in every month, either.

Withdrawals are easy and penalty-free at any time you have the account – but taking money out will reduce the amount of bonus you’ll get.

At the end of the second year and fourth year of holding the account, you’ll get paid your bonus.

This bonus is a whopping 50% of the highest amount you’ve saved to date in the account. That’s not 50% on the account balance at the time of payment: it’s the highest balance you’ve achieved ever on the account in the bonus period (which is years 1 and 2, then years 3 and 4).

That’s an important distinction: it means that, if you REALLY need to dip into your savings, you can still get the bonus on them. You just won’t be able to get the biggest bonus (as you can only pay £50 in each month).

For example, let’s say you’ve saved £400 in your account by the end of the second year. You actually managed to save £500, but had to withdraw £100 for an emergency bill payment.

Your bonus would be £250 – 50% of £500 – as that’s the highest amount you’ve held in the account so far.

Of course, if you pay in £50 a month for the full four years, that means you’ve saved £2,400 of your own money – leading to a huge £1,200 bonus total from the Government. This is paid in two instalments: at the end of year two, the maximum bonus is £600 (if you’ve saved your full allowance of £1,200). At the end of year four, when the account closes, you’ll receive a further £600 if you’ve saved another £1,200.

There are no savings accounts AT ALL that offer such a generous and GUARANTEED return! If you can get this account, do it!

Who is Eligible for Help to Save?

You need to show that you’re earning enough money through some paid work before you become eligible for the account. Don’t worry: it’s not a large amount and can be earned by your household so if you and your partner both have some work, both incomes count towards the amount (as Universal Credit is shared for couples, too).

You can’t use your Universal Credit payment to qualify for the account. This is where the account encourages people to work and save: if you’re earning through a job, but have a low income, you can still receive some Universal Credit – and it’s these people that the account is aimed at.

If earning the minimum amount to qualify means you won’t get Universal Credit that month, don’t panic! Your Universal Credit doesn’t automatically stop the minute you earn more than your UC entitlement. That’s why monthly assessments exist: it monitors your AVERAGE income over a period of time (making it ideal for the self-employed or those working irregular hours).

To qualify, you must:

• Receive any amount of Universal Credit
• OR receive Working Tax Credit OR Child Tax Credit
• Earn at least £793.17 from paid work in your last monthly assessment period
• Be resident in the UK

THE APRIL 2025 UPDATE

If you’ve just read that and thought you won’t qualify for an account – think again! In April 2025, the minimum earning threshold is being slashed to £1. So you only need to earn £1 in earnings, in one Universal Credit assessment period, to be eligible to apply for an account.

If you stop receiving benefits after opening a Help to Save account, you can keep the account for the full four years and still receive the bonuses.

When Do I Get My Bonus?

You receive your bonus directly into your bank account. It happens twice: once at the two-year anniversary and again at the four-year mark when the account closes.

It’s not paid into your Help to Save account – it’s paid into your dedicated bank account. That means if you want it to go straight into another savings account, you can put that as the account you’d like it to be paid into. Otherwise, it’ll go to your current account.

At the fourth-year anniversary, you’ll get your bonus payment and have to withdraw your full amount saved as the account closes.

What Are the Advantages of Help to Save?

The most obvious advantage here is FREE MONEY! You have to wait a couple of years to get it – but for a relatively small monthly investment, it’s a fantastic and guaranteed return of 50% on your savings. NO other savings product offers such surety or high returns. 

Other advantages of Help to Save include:

• The bonus is tax-free
• Couples can each hold an account
• You can save as little as £1 a month
• You can withdraw money if you need it
• Bonuses paid every two years (so you can anticipate the payment)
• The account doesn’t cost anything to have
• It encourages regular saving habits
• It’s easy to build an emergency savings fund

It’s also worth noting that the account is operated by NS&I, the state-backed platform – so your savings are safer here than any other bank account.

If you have a joint Universal Credit claim with a spouse or partner, and you’re both eligible, you can BOTH have a Help to Save account. That means, between you, if you save £50 each a month across the four years, you’ll have saved £4,800 PLUS get bonuses totalling £2,400 between you – that’s enough for a house deposit.

If you’re saving for a house deposit, you could maximise the Government returns by putting your bonus payments into a Lifetime ISA, and when the Help to Save account matures move across your savings into the LISA, to get an EXTRA £1,000 tax-free. There are lots of restrictions with this type of account, so make sure you research first.

Are There Any Disadvantages?

There are few disadvantages to having a Help to Save account.

You do have to meet the eligibility requirements to open an account. However, these are quite easy to meet and you only need to have met the earnings requirement of £793.17 in ONE assessment period before you open a Help to Save account. That is also a joint amount if you live with a partner or spouse – so if one of you earns £300 in a month and the other earns £500 in a month, that’s £800 total so would qualify.

That means people on irregular hour contracts, or the self-employed, may have an overall low income – but find one month makes them eligible to apply for the account.

If you have lots of debt you may be better off paying off high-interest debts than saving your money.

You can’t open another Help to Save account once your four years is over. Similarly, if you close it before your four-year term is up, you cannot open a new one.

Will Help to Save Affect My Benefits?

If you’re only saving into this account, and have no other savings, then your benefits won’t be affected.

If you already have some savings, however, it could affect your entitlement to some benefits.

For example, any savings over £6,000 could impact your Council Tax benefit, while savings above £16,000 disqualify you from receiving any benefits at all.

The bonus, however, is not a taxable income. This means it won’t affect your Working Tax Credit or Child Tax Credit eligibility.

How to Open a Help to Save Account

The Help to Save account links to your Universal Credit online account. This means it’s easy to find out if you’re eligible to apply: it’ll tell you during the application process if you’ve earned enough in your last assessment period.

Bear in mind that it can take up to a week for your assessment period to update, so wait at least 7 days after your most recent monthly assessment to apply for a Help to Save account.

Go to the Help to Save Application link to start your application. You’ll need a Government Gateway ID and password – if you don’t have one, you can set one up during this process.

Follow the steps on the screen to apply. You’ll need to add your mobile phone number so that when you log in, the system can send a security code each time for a secure login process.

When your account has been accepted and set up, you can amend your bank details. If possible, set up a direct debit to transfer a regular amount each month. This helps you remember to save every month to make the most of your saving potential!

More Ways to Save on a Low Income

The biggest challenge with having a Help to Save account is finding the £50 a month to save. You don’t have to save that much, of course – but if you can, that bags you the biggest bonus.

Here are just a few ways to boost your income – even without much time on your hands.

Take surveys

Online survey sites like Swagbucks and Toluna offer an easy way to make small bits of cash here and there in your spare time.

Answer surveys about your spending habits, opinions, or lifestyle for just a few minutes each day and you’ll quickly see the fund build!

Become a mystery shopper

Get paid to go shopping, visit the cinema, and even travel! Mystery shoppers review all sorts of places from retail outlets to restaurants and even airlines.

You’re sent on a mission to try a product or service. You have to then provide feedback about your shopping experience – both positive and negative – to help companies improve their service.

You’ll be paid for your time and reimbursed for your purchases – so it’s a great way to dine out for free, too!

Sell your crafts

If you’re a crafty person with a hobby that’s a passion, use it! Whether you’re a keen knitter or avid woodturner, there’s a market for your items out there.

Online shops like Etsy make it easy to sell your creations to a wide audience across the world. Just be sure to declare all income as you would a normal self-employed business – and make sure you’re not being stung by platform or shipping fees, too.

Sell your skills

You don’t have to make things to make money! Offer your skills as a tutor if you’ve got a knack for teaching, or take on the tasks everyone hates but you secretly love – like ironing.

The digital age means we’re all consuming more content than ever – and that means writers and graphic designers have come into their own as a freelance force. Use these skills to side hustle until you’ve built a solid customer base – then you can always launch as a full-time business!

You can earn up to £1,000 a year before declaring income from ‘ad-hoc’ jobs, too.

Register as a childminder

Many people on Universal Credit are either part-time workers or stay-at-home parents with children. If you’re already looking after your own children, consider registering as a childminder to watch other kids, too.

This is a hugely responsible role, but is ideal for parents who need to work around their young family.

Again, like any of these income-generating ideas: make sure you declare all payments (even cash ones) in your tax return and any Universal Credit assessments.

Use cashback websites

We don’t advocate shopping for the sake of ‘a good deal’ if you wouldn’t have bought something without that incredible discount!

However, websites like Quidco and Topcashback offer a great way to boost your income on things you’re planning to buy anyway. You earn a small percentage of each purchase back – which quickly adds up to hundreds of pounds each year.

Cashback is seen as a refund of your money and not income – so it’s not taxable for basic-rate taxpayers (so you don’t need to declare it as income, like you do for the above suggestions).
