2. Understand free listings

eBay now allows private sellers 300 free listings a month on almost all categories, and it’s 35p a listing after that. If you want to pay extra to promote, it’ll still cost something – but could net you a better audience to boost your profit. You can set a reserve price which means the item won’t sell unless it reaches that price, but you’ll pay 4% of that reserve whether the item sells or not.

On some items, like cars and vehicles, eBay will let you know you’re listing your item for free when you put it live, you’ll still pay a final value fee. This is 10% of the final cost of the item, including postage. There will also be a PayPal fee if you use that to get your cash.

It’s not a lot, but something to be aware of when looking at how much you’ll actually make on each sale. When you set up your selling account, the easiest method to pay these fees is by direct debit each month. You’ll get an invoice of how much you owe.

You won’t pay a final value fee if your item doesn’t sell. So if it fails to attract any buyers, try again. You can choose to automate this process by ticking the box to allow relisting if it doesn’t sell. It may be that the right buyer wasn’t around at the time, so don’t give up!

3. Download the eBay app

If you sell often it’s worth downloading eBay’s free app. Using it to post listings is quick and easy – and it means that you can keep an eye on your listings and respond to queries on the go. You can take photos, create your listing, and keep track of how auctions are going all in one place.

4. Make your ebay listing stand out

With 1.7 billion live items on eBay, making your listing stand out is crucial.

When buyers search for an item, eBay only looks for words in the listing’s title, so always use keywords such as brand names, colour, and sizes. Double check spellings so people can find your items!

5. Be original

A little bit of copying and pasting with a few adjustments and tweaks will save you loads of time and effort when writing up descriptions for products. But never copy descriptions or pictures wholesale, as this infringes other sellers’ copyright. You could also accidentally include damage that isn’t on your item but is on the other person’s, which reduces its value!

Look at other successful sellers to see how they describe their products and learn from them.

If you sell lots of the same thing, write up your own template and save it on a file on your computer or phone. Then you can copy and paste it, fill in the particulars for the item (size, colour, etc.), add photos and you’re pretty much done!

Ensure that you ship sold items carefully, as if it arrives broken you must give the buyer a refund.

What’s more, if you leave buying your packaging until the last minute, you’ll end up forking out more than necessary. Cut costs and recycle used jiffy bags and bubble wrap.

If you must shell out for brand new packaging, look online for the best deals. Retailers such as Amazon sell job lots of mailing bags, which come in a variety of sizes, for as little as £3.

Pound shops and other discount stores are also great for cheap packaging, whether it be parcel paper or bubble envelopes.

With each listing, you can list up to 12 p­hotos for free. Take advantage of this so that potential buyers can see what you’re selling.

Adding multiple good-quality photos to your listing to help you increase sales and give your buyers a more accurate idea of what to expect – and reassure them that you’re a legitimate seller.

Aim for a well-lit, clutter-free, plain white background and always take photos from several angles highlighting the condition of the item. Be honest about any imperfections (nicks and scratches, etc.)

If you’re a new seller with little or no feedback, buyers might be reluctant to make purchases from you.

Endless takeaways seem like the easy option and the temptation to regularly order in is strong, especially as you aren’t walking past any shops on your way home from the office to pick up fresh groceries after work!

If you can, keep takeaways to the minimum or cook your own healthy alternatives to your favourite classics.

Keeping to regular meals can also help. It’s very easy to mindlessly snack while working from home – hands up if you’ve polished off a whole packet of biscuits in a day before!

Sticking to regular, nutritious meals will help prevent this as you should feel full and satisfied for longer after eating.

Don’t forget to drink water too. It’s very easy to find yourself on your fourth of fifth coffee without realising it, but don’t forget coffee is actually dehydrating. Working from home can help you save money and improve your financial health. For starters, you don’t have the cost of the commute or the allure of after work drinks!

Instead, get up each morning and follow the same pattern. Whether it’s having a coffee, a shower, or cooking yourself a nice breakfast, the important thing is to stick to a routine and avoid lying in bed with your laptop all morning.

It’s also really important to take breaks and get away from endless screens regularly. A quick stand up and stretch every hour, will help avoid aches and pains while giving your mind a much-needed break.

Where you can, take a proper break in the day and get some fresh air. Getting out in daylight will make a big difference if your working hours allow it. Schedule this into your day to stop yourself from putting it off because it’s a bit too cold or raining.

If you’re struggling with productivity, or social media scrolling is distracting you too much, try scheduling in fun activities as rewards. This could be anything from a break to watch an episode of your favourite TV show after you’ve met a deadline or even a bubble bath.

It’s a good idea to mark the end of the working day too. Try to avoid checking your emails well into the evening and working anti-social hours. Instead, shut your laptop down and put it away until the morning once you’ve finished for the day.

• Do some thorough research about the cuddling industry and see if it’s really for you
• Sign up for the Cuddle Professionals International Accredited Course to become a qualified cuddler and equip yourself with the skills needed
• Decide how you’d like to operate your business. You might wish to join an agency, a directory, or create your own limited company.

Open a cuddle cafe

If you have a passion for hospitality, why not combine it with your cuddling capabilities? The concept of the ‘cuddle cafe’ started in Japan – where customers can order a certain type of cuddle off the menu, ranging from the likes of a 20-minute power nap to a full night’s rest in the arms of a comforting stranger. Apart from the hefty cover charge, customers would be billed according to the length of time they spent at the cafe.

So far, it doesn’t seem like anything similar exists in the UK, so why not be a pioneer?

Work independently

Finally, you could go your own way entirely and set up a cuddling business from home:

• Designate a special room/area for cuddles and make it as cosy as possible
• Work out a ‘menu’ of cuddles you are able to offer and how long each would take
• Set up a website people can make bookings through
• Advertise your services – if you’re nervous about putting yourself out there on something like Gumtree, try spreading the word through friends and family first.

Just be sure to have a very strict screening process for clients – perhaps you could arrange a coffee meeting in a public place beforehand and also have another person around the house whenever you have a client. Safety first!

How much you can make

A minimum rate of £50 an hour is suggested, with many experienced cuddlers earning over £100 an hour – some up to £150 an hour. You can vary your rate depending on options, such as if you will go to visit people or they come to you, and if you need to hire space for your cuddle session.

Make sure you include public liability insurance in your business plans. You should also make sure you have a clear screening process, and some professional cuddlers choose to hire an assistant for additional security (the assistant does not need to participate, but should attend appointments).

Thankfully, there are plenty of summer jobs available around the UK, from the relatively easy to the more challenging, but all will get you out of the office, away from the shops and into a new adventure. So here’s our roundup of ways you can gain employment this summer – start looking now to make sure you have something good lined up for your summer months!

Earn Money Fruit Picking 

Over the last few years, there’s been a shortage of willing fruit pickers offering their services to British farms. As a result there are usually plenty of fruit-picking jobs available throughout the summer. 

What you’ll be picking will depend of course on the farm but also on the month. For example, strawberries and gooseberries are often picked from early June to mid July, plums and apples are picked in late August, and apples and pears are picked in September. 

Your best bet would be to travel to your local farm and speak to the owners directly. Also look out for adverts in local shop windows and village halls. Find a farmers’ market near you and ask about any jobs going. 

Picking Jobs is a useful website where you can put in a search for fruit picking in Europe and see what’s available. Anywork Anywhere has a similar set-up and can be used to search for all kinds of other seasonal jobs both here and abroad. When you see a job that interests you, email the employer directly giving a few basic details about yourself and the dates you can do. 

You’ll be working outside so wear old casual clothes that you don’t mind getting dirty. You may be standing in fields for hours on end so comfortable shoes are a must. You’ll also need a hat and sun cream so you don’t get burnt. Insect repellent is a good idea, and make sure you drink plenty of water. 

Earnings are often cash in hand and if you earn enough you will be expected to take care of all your own taxes. It’s unlikely you’ll make a lot of money, so you may not exceed your personal income allowance. For this year, the personal allowance is £12,750.

You’ll typically be paid minimum wage: 

• £12.21 per hour for workers aged over 21
• A rate of £10 per hour for workers aged 18–20 inclusive 
• £7.55 per hour for all workers under the age of 18 (hours may be restricted due to employment laws)

Depending on the farm you’re working for, you might be paid hourly or daily, but sometimes you’re paid according to the amount you pick (e.g. you get x amount per kg or pound). This system is called ‘piecework’ and it’s fruitful (sorry) for those who work particularly hard.  

Take Up Gardening 

If you’re green-fingered then gardening for cash is an ideal way to make some extra money. Lots of people start thinking about the state of their garden in the weeks leading up to summer so it’s the ideal time to pounce on their insecurities! 

Offer your family, friends, colleagues and neighbours your services as an expert lawn mower, weed eradicator and plant potter and you’ll be a renowned small-time gardener in no time at all. 

Start attracting business by handing out cards and flyers (you can get free business cards printed from Banana Print) and by knocking on doors. Once you’re up and running, word of mouth should spread and work should roll in on a regular basis. 

Ideally, you’ll need your own lawnmower, garden tools and transportation to get from place to place. 

In terms of tools, get yourself a sharp pair of secateurs, a pair of tough gloves and a long, thin trowel.  A spade, fork, and rake are also versatile and useful. There are plenty of different tools out there to help make your job in the garden a bit easier. Here are a couple of useful websites:

Don’t think too big to begin with – offer basic services that people generally don’t have time to do themselves for a reasonable price. Professional gardening companies charge around £15 for simple tasks, so long as you can beat their quotes you should have plenty of business.

Fun in the sun at Reading Festival might seem a world away at the moment, but if you want to get some free festival tickets, you need to start planning now. Being a charity volunteer will get you into the festival for nothing and you’ll only have to work a few shifts – then you can enjoy the music with everyone else!

Air BnB Your House

Your part of the world could very well attract people to your very own B&B, run from your house. Think about what makes it special and what would encourage people to visit. Do you live in a picturesque village by the seaside, or in a busy and bustling city? How close are you to transport links and tourist attractions? Could you offer weekday stays for commuting professionals? Is your area the sort of place that people will want (or need) to come to and stay in?

Having a big house with lots of rooms is only half the battle won. Think about your unique selling point. 

You might also consider doing a survey to find out what people want from a B&B. Send it to friends, family and colleagues to get a good range of responses. Use that to inform your plans. Once you get going, ask guests for feedback. Also ask them to review your place on TripAdvisor and Google – both of those are useful ways to get business in for free. 

If you want a more regular income across the year, and a good spare room, consider the Rent a Room scheme which allows homeowners to earn £7500 tax free as they take in a lodger.

Are you great with kids? Looking after someone else’s offspring every now and then can be a fun summer money maker. A spot of good weather (hopefully) will mean that you can take the children for fun days out and not be stuck indoors too often. 

If you need some inspiration when it comes to entertaining children, Day Out With The Kids is a brilliant website full of places to visit for both indoor and outdoor activities in your region.

Childminding is different from babysitting or nannying. If you are babysitting for a few hours, you don’t need any qualifications. Nannies who work from their client’s home (and only look after the same family) don’t, either. But a childminder needs to register with Ofstead if they’re working from their own home or looking after children under the age of 8. Regardless of which you do, it would be good to take a child-specific first aid course.

You could charge around £12 an hour. The long summer holidays can be a real pain for working parents so there should be plenty of work. Whilst looking after children, be prepared for every eventuality. Keep phone numbers for parents and emergency contacts if for some reason you can’t get hold of them. Ask about allergies, medication or anything else you might need to know. 

Want to make it make it a more regular gig? Professional childminding and babysitting is a different story. If you’d like to look after the children of strangers on a regular basis, you’ll need to be a registered childminder and have the proper checks to be able to work without fear of a lawsuit. 

You can register with agency websites such as Sitters and Childcare.co.uk where you can advertise as a babysitter for free. The agency then makes all the arrangements for you. Also, drop a note through your neighbours’ doors to let them know you’re available to look after their children. You could even send out a group email to friends or work colleagues informing them of your new babysitting venture. Make sure you include a price list to establish the fact that it isn’t a free service from the start. 

Having a DBS check (formerly CRB) will make it easier for you to get work. If you don’t have one, you need to be willing to get one when an agency hires you.

Written references from people for whom you have already worked with make a big difference. However, even if you haven’t given babysitting a go before you can get character references from a teacher, your bank manager or another professional who knows you well. 

If you do find that you’re struggling to get work, initially keeping your rates down to a minimum will do your reputation a lot of good – then you can always increase your fee later on once you’ve established some regular clients. Don’t go below minimum wage, though!

Be a Dog Walker 

If you’re fit, active and enjoy spending time with animals then walking people’s dogs can be a really enjoyable and easy way to make some quick cash. 

You can find your first customers just by asking around. Start by asking neighbours and others you know if they require your services. If your workload seems a little feeble, you could try advertising with a poster or notice at your local veterinary clinic, pet shops and at rescue centres, if they’ll let you.  

After that, if you’re good and reliable, you’ll get publicity through word of mouth. Many dog walkers get clients when they meet them in the park. 

You can also join a local dog-walking agency such as PetPals or register yourself as a dog-walking company at NarpsUK. Narps members can access discounted rates for insurance and it can also help you find more work through its pet owner postcode search facility. You’ll earn less per hour but the work would be more regular. Just put ‘dog walking’ into your search engine with your local area and see what comes up. There are lots of little, local agencies all over the country. 

The biggest expense will be insurance. Pet Business Insurance offers a number of packages including: 

• Public liability – if the dog runs out into the road and causes a pile up, or bites someone 
• Care, custody and control – looks after the pet itself if it gets injured while under your care 
• Loss of key – if you lose your employer’s keys they’ll pay to change the locks 

You’ll also need a ready supply of pooper-scoopers and bags. Perhaps some doggy toys, too, but owners will usually supply their own.  Make sure you check with owners before feeding their dog any treats – and stick to those specifically made for dogs, no human food.

Sell Your Photos

If you’re a dab hand with a camera, try selling your summer holiday snaps to photo agencies and libraries. Each time one of your photos is sold you can earn a commission. Most sites will ask for a selection of photos to test the quality and there’s a chance they’ll be rejected. But if you don’t try you’ll never know! Also, there are lots of photo sites to choose from and there’s nothing to stop you from signing up with all of them. 

Even if you’re not going away, why not get out and about with your camera and start taking some pictures? For an idea of what stock libraries are looking for visit the websites themselves. They usually need images of people’s hometown, street, groups of people, and people in business and work shots. 

Sites such as Adobe often have a travel section for professional-quality photographs of interesting things and places. Others such as 123RF operate in a similar way. 

You can also try contacting smaller travel magazines – send an email to their pictures editor and find out their rates. 

If you want to submit a photo to sell, it has to be an RGB JPEG saved at a high setting (such as Photoshop level 10 setting or 48 MB in size). They must not be compressed file sizes. Usually the higher the image resolution, the more you’ll be paid, so keep files large. 

Do be careful about the pictures you submit – such as pictures of identifiable houses or models. Any person who’s in the photo will, in most cases, need a release form. This is signed by the model or house owner to cite that their permission has been given. This is because you will profit from their personal belongings. Also, some properties and logos are trademarked and therefore will not be accepted. 

What you charge is completely up to you, but it’s advisable to only charge what you think people can afford.  

Become a Lifeguard

If you’re a strong swimmer why not become a lifeguard for the perfect summer job? It’s a great way to meet people and although it’s a serious job (your role is to look after and possibly save someone’s life) it can be lots of fun too. 

There are two types of lifeguard: 

• Swimming pool lifeguards – employed by a leisure centre, private club, local authority, hotel or holiday centre 
• Beach lifeguards – employed by the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) 

Once you’re qualified try sites like Leisurejobs, Gapyear.com and Gumtree to find work. Also, contact your local pool and ask about vacancies. 

To be a pool lifeguard you’ll need one of the following qualifications: 

• The National Pool Lifeguard Qualification (NPLQ) 
• The National Aquatic Rescue Standard (NaRS): Pool Lifeguard 
• NPLQ and NaRS courses are based at local swimming pools or leisure centres. They are run through approved centres, such as colleges and swimming clubs. 

To be a beach lifeguard you’ll need one of the following qualifications: 

• RLSS National Beach Lifeguard Qualification 
• National Aquatic Rescue Standard (NaRS): Beach Lifeguard, run by the Surf Life Saving Association of Great Britain (SLSA GB) 

These qualifications can be gained by training with a commercial training organisation like Harlyn Surf School in Cornwal. Or, you can join a local RLSS Lifeguard club or SLSA GB life-saving club as a volunteer. 

You can get information on all lifeguard courses in your area through the Learndirect careers advice website. Expect to pay between £100 and £150, although if you receive benefits you may be entitled to discounts. Because you’ll be working with or around children, you’ll need to undergo a DBS (Disclosure and Barring Service check). 

Remote Admin Work

If you want to earn some extra cash on the side in the summer without going anywhere special, consider finding remote admin work. You can pick up jobs on sites like Fiverr, or ask around friends and family. If you’re a dab hand with spreadsheets and Word shortcuts, there are plenty of people who would like some extra help with the boring-but-necessary business tasks they have.

Target other freelancers or small businesses. They are the ones most likely to need extra assistance as a remote PA, admin worker, or even stuffing envelopes! The work is often flexible and can be charged by the hour – try to get at least £15 an hour for most tasks. Target local events companies too, as they may have lots of upcoming event that require bag stuffers and leafleters.

Designed for those in receipt of Universal Credit, this little-known savings account is available for many people on a low income. Over the course of 4 years, you could earn a massive £1200 FREE BONUS from the Government.

What is Help to Save?

The Government wants to encourage those on low incomes to save money. But, is saving really worth it when interest rates are so low and you need all the cash you’ve got?

Help to Save is the answer. It’s an easy-access savings account that comes with an added Government bonus in the second and fourth year you hold the account. The bonus isn’t interest – so it doesn’t count towards the annual £1000 tax-free allowance for interest earnings.

For the self-employed, it’s also worth noting that these bonuses don’t count as generated income – so no need to add them on your tax return.

The key things to know about Help to Save are:

1. You can save up to £50 a month (and there’s no penalty for months you don’t pay in)
2. If you’re in a couple, you can each have a Help to Save account
3. You’re eligible if you’re on Universal Credit and earn a household income of just £1 or more in one month
4. You only need to hit that earning amount once to qualify
5. In years two and four you get a bonus worth 50% your total savings of the highest amount saved in that year
6. You can withdraw your money at any time
7. It’s a Government scheme, so your money is safe (unlike, for example, a savings app that’s not covered by the FSCS rules).

How does Help to Save work?

You can pay between £1 to £50 a month into the account for a maximum of four years. You don’t have to pay in every month, either.

Withdrawals are easy and penalty-free at any time you have the account – but taking money out will reduce the amount of bonus you’ll get.

At the end of the second year and fourth year of holding the account, you’ll get paid your bonus.

This bonus is a whopping 50% of the highest amount you’ve saved to date in the account. That’s not 50% on the account balance at the time of payment: it’s the highest balance you’ve achieved ever on the account in the bonus period (which is years 1 and 2, then years 3 and 4).

That’s an important distinction: it means that, if you REALLY need to dip into your savings, you can still get the bonus on them. You just won’t be able to get the biggest bonus (as you can only pay £50 in each month).

For example, let’s say you’ve saved £400 in your account by the end of the second year. You actually managed to save £500, but had to withdraw £100 for an emergency bill payment.

Your bonus would be £250 – 50% of £500 – as that’s the highest amount you’ve held in the account so far.

Of course, if you pay in £50 a month for the full four years, that means you’ve saved £2,400 of your own money – leading to a huge £1,200 bonus total from the Government. This is paid in two instalments: at the end of year two, the maximum bonus is £600 (if you’ve saved your full allowance of £1,200). At the end of year four, when the account closes, you’ll receive a further £600 if you’ve saved another £1,200.

There are no savings accounts AT ALL that offer such a generous and GUARANTEED return! If you can get this account, do it!

Who is Eligible for Help to Save?

You need to show that you’re earning enough money through some paid work before you become eligible for the account. Don’t worry: it’s not a large amount and can be earned by your household so if you and your partner both have some work, both incomes count towards the amount (as Universal Credit is shared for couples, too).

You can’t use your Universal Credit payment to qualify for the account. This is where the account encourages people to work and save: if you’re earning through a job, but have a low income, you can still receive some Universal Credit – and it’s these people that the account is aimed at.

If earning the minimum amount to qualify means you won’t get Universal Credit that month, don’t panic! Your Universal Credit doesn’t automatically stop the minute you earn more than your UC entitlement. That’s why monthly assessments exist: it monitors your AVERAGE income over a period of time (making it ideal for the self-employed or those working irregular hours).

To qualify, you must:

• Receive any amount of Universal Credit
• OR receive Working Tax Credit OR Child Tax Credit
• Earn at least £793.17 from paid work in your last monthly assessment period
• Be resident in the UK

THE APRIL 2025 UPDATE

If you’ve just read that and thought you won’t qualify for an account – think again! In April 2025, the minimum earning threshold is being slashed to £1. So you only need to earn £1 in earnings, in one Universal Credit assessment period, to be eligible to apply for an account.

If you stop receiving benefits after opening a Help to Save account, you can keep the account for the full four years and still receive the bonuses.

When Do I Get My Bonus?

You receive your bonus directly into your bank account. It happens twice: once at the two-year anniversary and again at the four-year mark when the account closes.

It’s not paid into your Help to Save account – it’s paid into your dedicated bank account. That means if you want it to go straight into another savings account, you can put that as the account you’d like it to be paid into. Otherwise, it’ll go to your current account.

At the fourth-year anniversary, you’ll get your bonus payment and have to withdraw your full amount saved as the account closes.

What Are the Advantages of Help to Save?

The most obvious advantage here is FREE MONEY! You have to wait a couple of years to get it – but for a relatively small monthly investment, it’s a fantastic and guaranteed return of 50% on your savings. NO other savings product offers such surety or high returns. 

Other advantages of Help to Save include:

• The bonus is tax-free
• Couples can each hold an account
• You can save as little as £1 a month
• You can withdraw money if you need it
• Bonuses paid every two years (so you can anticipate the payment)
• The account doesn’t cost anything to have
• It encourages regular saving habits
• It’s easy to build an emergency savings fund

It’s also worth noting that the account is operated by NS&I, the state-backed platform – so your savings are safer here than any other bank account.

If you have a joint Universal Credit claim with a spouse or partner, and you’re both eligible, you can BOTH have a Help to Save account. That means, between you, if you save £50 each a month across the four years, you’ll have saved £4,800 PLUS get bonuses totalling £2,400 between you – that’s enough for a house deposit.

If you’re saving for a house deposit, you could maximise the Government returns by putting your bonus payments into a Lifetime ISA, and when the Help to Save account matures move across your savings into the LISA, to get an EXTRA £1,000 tax-free. There are lots of restrictions with this type of account, so make sure you research first.

Are There Any Disadvantages?

There are few disadvantages to having a Help to Save account.

You do have to meet the eligibility requirements to open an account. However, these are quite easy to meet and you only need to have met the earnings requirement of £793.17 in ONE assessment period before you open a Help to Save account. That is also a joint amount if you live with a partner or spouse – so if one of you earns £300 in a month and the other earns £500 in a month, that’s £800 total so would qualify.

That means people on irregular hour contracts, or the self-employed, may have an overall low income – but find one month makes them eligible to apply for the account.

If you have lots of debt you may be better off paying off high-interest debts than saving your money.

You can’t open another Help to Save account once your four years is over. Similarly, if you close it before your four-year term is up, you cannot open a new one.

Will Help to Save Affect My Benefits?

If you’re only saving into this account, and have no other savings, then your benefits won’t be affected.

If you already have some savings, however, it could affect your entitlement to some benefits.

For example, any savings over £6,000 could impact your Council Tax benefit, while savings above £16,000 disqualify you from receiving any benefits at all.

The bonus, however, is not a taxable income. This means it won’t affect your Working Tax Credit or Child Tax Credit eligibility.

How to Open a Help to Save Account

The Help to Save account links to your Universal Credit online account. This means it’s easy to find out if you’re eligible to apply: it’ll tell you during the application process if you’ve earned enough in your last assessment period.

Bear in mind that it can take up to a week for your assessment period to update, so wait at least 7 days after your most recent monthly assessment to apply for a Help to Save account.

Go to the Help to Save Application link to start your application. You’ll need a Government Gateway ID and password – if you don’t have one, you can set one up during this process.

Follow the steps on the screen to apply. You’ll need to add your mobile phone number so that when you log in, the system can send a security code each time for a secure login process.

When your account has been accepted and set up, you can amend your bank details. If possible, set up a direct debit to transfer a regular amount each month. This helps you remember to save every month to make the most of your saving potential!

More Ways to Save on a Low Income

The biggest challenge with having a Help to Save account is finding the £50 a month to save. You don’t have to save that much, of course – but if you can, that bags you the biggest bonus.

Here are just a few ways to boost your income – even without much time on your hands.

Take surveys

Online survey sites like Swagbucks and Toluna offer an easy way to make small bits of cash here and there in your spare time.

Answer surveys about your spending habits, opinions, or lifestyle for just a few minutes each day and you’ll quickly see the fund build!

Become a mystery shopper

Get paid to go shopping, visit the cinema, and even travel! Mystery shoppers review all sorts of places from retail outlets to restaurants and even airlines.

You’re sent on a mission to try a product or service. You have to then provide feedback about your shopping experience – both positive and negative – to help companies improve their service.

You’ll be paid for your time and reimbursed for your purchases – so it’s a great way to dine out for free, too!

Sell your crafts

If you’re a crafty person with a hobby that’s a passion, use it! Whether you’re a keen knitter or avid woodturner, there’s a market for your items out there.

Online shops like Etsy make it easy to sell your creations to a wide audience across the world. Just be sure to declare all income as you would a normal self-employed business – and make sure you’re not being stung by platform or shipping fees, too.

Sell your skills

You don’t have to make things to make money! Offer your skills as a tutor if you’ve got a knack for teaching, or take on the tasks everyone hates but you secretly love – like ironing.

The digital age means we’re all consuming more content than ever – and that means writers and graphic designers have come into their own as a freelance force. Use these skills to side hustle until you’ve built a solid customer base – then you can always launch as a full-time business!

You can earn up to £1,000 a year before declaring income from ‘ad-hoc’ jobs, too.

Register as a childminder

Many people on Universal Credit are either part-time workers or stay-at-home parents with children. If you’re already looking after your own children, consider registering as a childminder to watch other kids, too.

This is a hugely responsible role, but is ideal for parents who need to work around their young family.

Again, like any of these income-generating ideas: make sure you declare all payments (even cash ones) in your tax return and any Universal Credit assessments.

Use cashback websites

We don’t advocate shopping for the sake of ‘a good deal’ if you wouldn’t have bought something without that incredible discount!

However, websites like Quidco and Topcashback offer a great way to boost your income on things you’re planning to buy anyway. You earn a small percentage of each purchase back – which quickly adds up to hundreds of pounds each year.

Cashback is seen as a refund of your money and not income – so it’s not taxable for basic-rate taxpayers (so you don’t need to declare it as income, like you do for the above suggestions).

Luckily, there are a few ways you can incorporate helping out charities into your daily life, without having to spend money you don’t have. Here are just a few of them…

• Donate via a cashback site
• Give to charity online: search engines that pay charities with each search
• Remembering to tick the Gift Aid box
• Give to charity by donating your stuff
• Play games online and give to charity

Donate via a cashback site

You might already use a cashback site – but if you don’t, ask a friend if they use one that they can send a referral link to. This means you both get some cash as an incentive when you sign up! TopCashBack, Swagbucks, and Quidco are popular choices. 

You can choose to keep your cashback earned from your purchases for yourself, or donate to charity – either some or all of it. This helps you give back without spending anything more than you would have anyway!

Give to charity online with charity cashback sites

The alternative to using a cashback site of your own is to use one that manages the donations on your behalf. EasyFundraising.org and Savoo are both great examples of websites that have been set up to make sure consumers don’t pay anything extra, but instead of giving you cashback, they donate their commission from your sale to a charity of your choice.

Savoo is a particular favourite, because it also has a wide range of discount codes and offers, which means you save money while also raising money for charity.

Remember to tick the Gift Aid box 

Never really been sure what Gift Aid is? It’s a nifty government scheme can help charities, with literally no effort from you at all. 

Gift Aid is a long-running government scheme that gives charities a basic 20% tax relief on whatever you’re donating to them, as long as you’re a UK taxpayer. The scheme has been in place for 30 years, and has gifted charities billions of pounds in that time. All you have to do is tick the Gift Aid box whenever you’re making a donation, sponsoring your neighbour to run that 5k, etc, to ensure Gift Aid is included. Easy! 

Gift Aid doesn’t cost you anything extra – but means the charity gets the tax relief on your donation. This puts more money in their pocket!

Give to charity by donating your stuff

You don’t need to be giving money to charity to be helping them out. Instead of throwing out that old chair or pair of jeans you’re bored of, or those kid’s shoes that don’t fit anymore, why not drop them off at your local charity shop instead? 

Of course, you can support charities by shopping in their high street stores too – books, DVDs, clothes and lots more will be significantly cheaper than they would be in other retail stores, and you’ll be doing a good deed in the process. Remember to hand your donation bag to a member of staff and ask for the Gift Aid form to make sure they get the most from your donations, too.

Play games online and give to charity 

Did you know you can raise money for charity just by playing games online? Turns out you can! 

Our favourite find is the Free Rice website, from the World Food Programme. For every correct answer, the site’s sponsors will send the cash equivalent of 10 grains of rice to the World Food Programme, who will funnel it into feeding those in need around the world. Spending time on your phone has never felt so worthy!

1. Make sure you are on the electoral roll

There are two electoral registers: public and private. You can opt out of the public register (and we usually suggest you do to avoid spam). You cannot opt out of the private register – this is what local councils use for elections etc. You can only be contacted from the private register for things of public interest, like a General Election.

Contact your local authority to request to be put on the electoral roll. If you’re already registered, it won’t hurt to have your information updated anyway! If you’ve recently moved house, make it a priority on your To Do list to update your details with your local council ASAP.

2. Pay bills on time

Every missed payment knocks off points on your credit file.

If you cannot pay on time, contact the supplier, credit card provider, or bank as soon as possible to discuss what options are available to you. You may be able to change your repayment schedule, or make a minimum repayment instead.

3. Check your credit record for CCJs

Check your credit record through the credit reference agencies like Experian. Make a note of any unusual activity that you don’t recognise and contact the credit agencies to investigate.

Most importantly, check for County Court Judgements (CCJs). These can be issued and missed if you’ve recently moved house, for example, and didn’t receive the summons. It’s really detrimental to your score, so resolve this as soon as you can.

4. Check any resolved bankruptcies

If you’ve paid off your debts or have been discharged from your bankruptcy, check your record with Experian, TransUnion (formerly Call Credit), and Equifax. Settled or discharged debts can take up to four months to show on your record – if they aren’t listed after that time, contact the credit agencies and the lender.

5. Look at closed accounts as well as open ones

Any line of credit – even a mobile phone bill – that you’ve paid off should show as closed and settled on your credit record. If it’s not showing as settled – or worse, as a default – contact the lender or organisation immediately to sort it.

6. Work on building your credit history

Companies such as Creditspring offer affordable ways to borrow and increase your credit score. Whilst rebuilding your credit score can seem complicated, Creditspring offer a set repayment plan (much like a subscription), with each repayment made on time increasing your score.

Other examples include companies like Loqbox, which give you a ‘loan’ that you can’t actually touch. You make monthly repayments towards this ‘loan’, and when you’re done you can access the money. Think about it like enforced saving – you get the money you put away each month at the end, but have the benefit of an improved score, too.

7. Let your rent improve your credit

Tenants can use Credit Ladder to prove they’re responsible to lenders. It’s a free service for tenants to use, too. You pay your monthly rent via Credit Ladder. They report each month to credit reference agencies that your rent – a large sum – has been repaid in full, on time. Over time, this rebuilds your score as a responsible borrower.

8. Use a credit improver

Similar to using your rent – an everyday expense – to rebuild your credit, you can use small savings to help, too. A credit improver service like Loqbox gives you a small loan.

You don’t get the cash, though! It’s locked into an account for you. Every month, you make agreed ‘repayments’ to this loan which are then reported as reliable repayments to the credit agencies. At the end of it, the money you paid is released into a new bank account for you. It’s a great two-fer: you get to rebuild your credit score AND finish up with savings! This digital savings voucher system has an interest-free ‘loan’, but you’ll need to pay fees of either £2.99 a month or £30 a year (which can be paid through the ‘loan’) instead of paying interest.

9. Stop at the first rejection

If you’re rejected for any type of credit or bank account, STOP! Research your credit record with each of the three credit reference agencies. Don’t just keep applying, assuming you made a mistake on the form. Multiple rejections in a short space of time can take YEARS to knock off your credit record – so avoid it at all costs!

10. Seek help for debt ASAP

If you’re already spiralling into debt, don’t apply for credit. Especially avoid things like payday loans – they’re expensive and look really bad to lenders looking at your credit record. Instead, take a deep breath and seek help.

There’s no doubt that one of the greatest sources of financial distress for the newly self-employed is the sudden realisation that their first tax bill is much larger than expected. Payments on Account (POA) was devised to allow self-employed people to spread out their tax bill over a year. However, POA is also one of the most commonly misunderstood elements of the Self Assessment process, and many newly self-employed are unaware that it exists altogether.

As we enter a new financial tax year, perhaps now is the best time to get a headstart and really keep on top of your finances. So here’s everything you need to know about Payments on Account, and how you can ensure you are best prepared for your next tax return.

What are Payments on Account?

Simply, they are a way of paying off some of your tax bill in advance. You’ll pay two separate installments throughout the year, calculated based on your previous year’s tax bill. The first installment is due on 31st January, and the second is due on 31st July, with each of these two payments worth 50% of your previous tax bill.

There are some circumstances in which a POA will not be due. If your last tax bill was less than £1,000, or if more than 80% of your earnings are subject to PAYE, then you will be exempt from the POA system entirely.

It’s likely that payments on account will apply to the majority of self-employed people. Failure to pay the full amount may result in penalty fines and interest, so it’s certainly worth getting your head around the ins and outs of the POA system and how it works.

How does it work and how do I calculate my POA?

The reason it causes so much confusion among newly self-employed is because the first instalment on 31 January is due on the same day as your ‘balancing payment’ (which clears your tax bill from the previous year). If it’s your first time making a POA, you’ll essentially need to pay 150% of your tax bill in one go.

For example, if your tax bill for 2018/19 was £3,000. Your total tax bill on 31st January 2020 would have been £4,500, including the balancing payment of £3,000 and an additional advance payment of £1,500 (50% of £3,000) at the same time. Then, on 31st July 2020, you would have to pay another £1,500.

However, this means that when you file your return for the following financial year, you’ll already have paid £3,000 towards it. If your bill for the 2019/20 tax year is more than £3,000, you will simply need to make a balancing payment on 31st January 2021 and your POA will increase accordingly.

For example, if your tax bill for 2019/20 is £5,000, on 31st January 2021 you will need to pay the balancing payment of £2,000, and the first installment of your Payment on Account, worth £2,500 (50% of £5,000). The total amount due on the 31st January would be £4,500, and an additional £2,500 due on 31st July 2021.

It’s worth noting that if you think that your income for the next tax year will be lower than in the previous tax year, you can apply to have your POA reduced. However, if it transpires that you have underpaid your POA, you will have to pay interest on the outstanding amount, which could turn out into a hefty tax bill.

4 tips to help you keep on top of your tax payments

Keep ahead of your payments on account with these top tips.

1. Use a digital platform

Technology has been simplifying processes for decades, and when it comes to staying on top of your finances, it can be the ultimate assistant. For small businesses, invoicing software streamlines financial operations and ensures timely and accurate billing.

Downloading a free bookkeeping app is one way of ensuring that you regularly update your accounts. It also helps you to prepare for the two payments on account you are need to make to HMRC each year. In fact, HMRC is seeking to digitise most of the taxpaying process, so it is encouraging taxpayers to file and make payments online via software.

2. Jog your memory with calendar reminders

With the financial calendar starting and ending on April 6th, remembering all the financial dates and deadlines can be difficult. Fortunately, when it comes to ensuring payments are punctual, calendar reminders can be a real asset. Here are a few ways to ensure that you fully utilise them:

• Make sure to set repeat annual reminders well in advance of both POA deadlines. This’ll reduce panic near the deadline!
• Add in additional notes alongside reminders. This can be anything you like, but it is worth routinely reviewing your finances to check if you are earning more or less than the previous year, as this will impact your POA.

3. Set up direct debits

Setting up a direct debit specifically for your tax payments is a useful way to ensure that you don’t miss the POA deadlines, and therefore avoid paying a £100 late payment fine. Once set up, be sure to check that the direct debit account contains enough capital to cover the bi-annual payments.

If for any reason your POA is increased, or you have to reduce it, then be sure to update the value of your direct debit payment accordingly.

4. Put aside money for POA

If you are newly self-employed, the costs of running and managing your own activities can be a surprisingly time-consuming and costly practice, so making sure that you are budgeting effectively for your POA expenditure is important.

Putting money aside is something most of us are familiar with. So, whether you’re saving for a car, house or pension, applying the same philosophy to POA is a good way to ensure that money is left available when the time comes. Save a portion of earnings per week or month specifically for your tax payments, and you’ll be surprised how quickly funds build up.
